Design and Technology (DT)
Intent
At Flamstead Village School, we aim for our children to build their design, making and evaluating skills and to continue to build their technical knowledge of materials, textiles, construction, mechanisms, food and electric systems progressively from the Early Years Foundation Stage to year 6.
We aim to provide a progressive and broad DT curriculum that is closely linked to the National curriculum requirements. We encourage collaborative working to develop team building skills through problem solving and building children’s resilience particularly through the evaluation process. Using a diverse range of materials, we provide new learning experiences for our pupils to develop key life skills;
Implementation
At Flamstead Village School, pupils have the opportunity to experience a sequenced and varied curriculum using a wide range of materials and processes, making cross curricular links whenever possible.
We have a two year rolling long term plan where each class is taught three half termly units over the school year. The topics are linked to the overarching theme for that half term to develop a meaningful approach to learning.
Design and Technology is taught through the teaching of well-planned lessons using the National Curriculum supported by Planbee units to enrich pupils’ curiosity and love of learning. Children are given the opportunity to look at key events and individuals in Design and Technology that have helped shape the world. Pupils have access to relevant and varied resources and encouraged to be able to make independent informed choices.
At Flamstead Village school pupils are given opportunity to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
Impact
By the time children leave Flamstead Village School we endeavour to ensure the children will be able to develop creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They will be able to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users and critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
