Flamstead Village School

PSHE

Intent

At Flamstead Village School, we aim to nurture pupils into secure, confident, resilient and respectful members of the community. We encourage children to be enquiring, kind and responsible individuals who understand that their voice matters and know how to use it positively.

Our PSHE curriculum, including statutory Relationships and Health Education, is delivered primarily through the Jigsaw Programme. It equips pupils with the age-appropriate knowledge and skills they need to build positive relationships, manage their physical and emotional wellbeing, keep themselves safe and prepare for life beyond school. We promote equality, respect and inclusion and ensure learning is accessible to all pupils, including those with SEND.

Implementation

The Jigsaw Programme provides the main structure for our PSHE curriculum. All year groups explore six themes, or “puzzles”, at an age-appropriate level:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Each unit is introduced through a whole-school assembly to establish shared language and expectations. Lessons provide opportunities for discussion, reflection and mindfulness within a safe and supportive learning environment.

Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build on their knowledge, vocabulary and skills as they progress through the school. Statutory Relationships and Health Education is complemented by relevant learning across Science, Computing and Online Safety. Teaching is adapted appropriately to pupils’ age, stage and individual needs, including reasonable adjustments for pupils with SEND.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is reflected in pupils’ knowledge, confidence, behaviour and ability to manage their emotions, relationships and personal safety.

Assessment is ongoing and purposeful. Teachers use questioning, observation, discussion and pupil reflection to assess understanding and inform future teaching, in line with our school policy.

We evaluate impact through pupil voice, pupils’ understanding and use of key knowledge and vocabulary, positive attitudes towards themselves and others, respectful relationships and engagement in school life.

This ensures that pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their education and life beyond school.
