Flamstead Village School
Physical Education
Intent
As a school, we are committed to delivering a high-quality, broad and balanced curriculum that is accessible to all, which will develop every pupil's ability and skill. Each year, pupils will be provided with a range of activities that will help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. Specialist Sports Coaches from Challenge Sport are used throughout the school to provide the pupils with the best possible teaching.
We will provide opportunities to compete in sport and activities, within school and between schools, which embed the values of fairness, respect and team work. We will provide pupils with the skills to lead healthy, active lifestyles.
There will be a number of key themes taught each year. These are as follows:
- hitting and striking
- throwing and catching
- travelling with a ball
- passing and possession
- using space appropriately within a game
- attacking and defending
- rules and tactics
- competing and/or performing
These will be revisited and built upon year after year in order to practise and build upon skills.
Implementation
- PE at Flamstead Village school provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, athletics and outdoor adventure.
- Pupils participate in two high-quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half-term. In addition, pupils are encouraged to participate in a varied range of extracurricular activities.
- Pupils are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area, through our Dacorum Schools Partnership. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills.
- We employ Challenge Sport for Education to deliver high-quality PE lessons, twice a week in KS2. In EYFS and KS1, Challenge Sport coaches deliver one PE session per week; the second session is taught by the class teacher.
- Each year, in the summer term, we have a sports week which incorporates sports day and other enrichment activities (e.g. Skip2Bfit).
- Pupils are encouraged to stay active at break times and can access a variety of equipment.
Impact
At Flamstead Village School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows pupils to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All pupils are provided with the necessary skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Pupils understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise. We aspire for children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity which will become part of their future life outside primary school. Pupils can represent the school at sporting events, and we share sporting achievements both in and out of school in Celebration Assembly, so that we are promoting sports and activities, as well as celebrating all levels of success. We aim for all Year 6 pupils to leave school with the skills to competently swim at least 25m and have the skills to self-rescue in the water, which are key life skills.
We monitor the effectiveness of the Sports Grant Premium and report the findings to the Governing Body.
