Flamstead Village School

PSHE

Intent

At Flamstead Village School, we aim to nurture pupils into secure, confident, resilient, and respectful members of the community. We encourage children to be enquiring, kind, and responsible individuals who understand that their voice matters and know how to use it positively.

Our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) curriculum is delivered through the Jigsaw Programme. This approach has been carefully selected to support the development of emotional literacy, social skills, and personal wellbeing. It equips pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to manage their lives both now and in the future, while also supporting their readiness to learn across the wider curriculum.

Implementation

The Jigsaw Programme is taught consistently across the school, with all year groups exploring the same theme (or “puzzle”) at an age-appropriate level. There are six units delivered throughout the academic year:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Each unit is introduced through a whole-school assembly to set the context and establish shared expectations. Lessons include opportunities for mindfulness and reflection, helping pupils to focus and engage fully in their learning.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge, skills, and understanding. Content is adapted to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is reflected in pupils’ confidence, behaviour, and ability to manage their emotions and relationships effectively.

Assessment is ongoing and purposeful. Teachers use questioning, observation, and discussion to assess understanding during lessons and throughout the school day.

We can evaluate impact through:

  • Pupil Voice and discussions
  • Positive attitudes to learning and relationships
  • Engagement in lessons and school life

This ensures that all pupils are supported to develop as well-rounded individuals, ready for the next stage of their education and life beyond school.
